Islamic State Attack Near Shiite Mosque in Muscat Kills Six, Injures 30

A rare and deadly shooting occurred near a Shiite mosque in Muscat, Oman, on July 15, 2024. The attack, which took place at the Imam Ali Mosque in the Wadi Kabir neighborhood, resulted in at least six fatalities, including four Pakistani nationals, one Indian national, and one Omani police officer. Additionally, around 30 people were injured, with many of the wounded being Pakistani nationals. The attack happened during a religious gathering to observe Ashura, a significant day of mourning for Shiite Muslims. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, marking its first known operation in Oman. The Omani police confirmed that three attackers were killed in the incident. Footage shows people fleeing as gunfire erupted. The U.S. embassy has urged vigilance, and local authorities are investigating the motive behind this rare breach of security in one of the most stable countries in the Middle East.
