Syrians Remove Hafez al-Assad's Name from Umayyad Mosque Wall After Baath Regime Overthrow
Dec 20, 2024, 10:30 AM
Following the overthrow of the Baath regime in Syria, citizens in Damascus have removed the name of Hafez al-Assad, the father of the ousted leader Bashar al-Assad, from the wall of the Umayyad Mosque. The name, which was inscribed on a marble plaque on the mosque's wall, was broken off by the public using a hammer. This act symbolizes a significant shift in the country's political landscape after the fall of the regime, which had been in power for 61 years.
