Supreme Court Unanimously Backs NRA 9-0 in Free Speech Case Against NY Official Vullo
May 30, 2024, 02:47 PM
In a unanimous 9-0 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in a First Amendment case against former New York state official Maria Vullo. The court held that the NRA plausibly alleged that Vullo violated its free speech rights by coercing DFS-regulated financial institutions, including insurers and banks, to terminate their business relationships with the NRA in 2017. This decision allows the NRA to proceed with its lawsuit, which claims that Vullo's actions were an attempt to punish or suppress the group's advocacy for gun rights. Justice Sonia Sotomayor authored the opinion, which vacated and remanded the previous judicial decision that had dismissed the NRA's claims.
