EU Mandates USB-C Charging for New Devices, iPhone 14 and SE Removed, Reducing 11,000 Tons of Waste by April 28, 2026

Starting December 28, 2024, the European Union mandates the use of USB-C charging ports for all new electronic devices sold in France and across the EU. This legislation applies to a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, headphones, and portable speakers. The aim of this directive is to simplify charging solutions for consumers and reduce electronic waste, which is estimated to decrease by 11,000 tons annually. Additionally, the regulation requires that all new laptops sold in the EU comply with the USB-C standard by April 28, 2026. In response to these new rules, Apple has already removed the iPhone 14 and iPhone SE from its online store in several EU countries, aligning its product offerings with the upcoming regulations.
