Niantic Uses Pokémon Go Data to Develop 150-Trillion-Parameter Geospatial AI Amid Espionage Accusation
Nov 20, 2024, 11:00 AM
Niantic, the company behind Pokémon Go, has announced it is using data collected from millions of players to build a large geospatial model (LGM). This AI model, which processes 150 trillion parameters, is designed to navigate the real world and has potential applications in robotics, smart glasses, and possibly the military. The data, which includes millions of images taken by players, has been used to train the AI to understand and map complex 3D spaces. While many players were unaware of their contributions, the model could significantly impact fields such as augmented reality (AR) and AI-powered navigation systems. Belarus has accused the game of espionage.
