New York Voters Approve Equal Rights Amendment with 71% Support, Enshrining Abortion Rights
Nov 6, 2024, 02:48 AM
On November 6, 2024, New York voters approved Proposition 1, also known as the Equal Rights Amendment, amending the state constitution to enshrine abortion rights and expand anti-discrimination protections. The amendment bans discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy outcomes, age, ethnicity, national origin, disability, and pregnancy. The measure passed with approximately 71% voting in favor and was called by the Associated Press. Despite millions spent against the measure by Trump supporters, the amendment cements New York's commitment to reproductive freedom and civil rights. New York Attorney General Letitia James hailed the passage, stating that "the right to choose will always be protected because in New York, we know it's your body, and it should always be your choice." Officials and advocates celebrated the amendment as a historic step in recognizing full human rights and solidifying New York's status as a state that strongly upholds freedom and equality.
