Poland Backs Trump's 5% GDP Defense Spending Goal, Sees 10-Year Timeline for NATO
Jan 12, 2025, 08:12 AM
Poland has expressed support for Donald Trump's call for NATO countries to increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP, according to Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. He stated that while Poland is close to meeting this target, other NATO members might need a decade to achieve it. This stance comes amidst Poland's efforts to bolster its military capabilities and advocate for increased defense spending within the EU, as it holds the presidency of the Council of the EU. Poland's defense spending is set to reach 5% of its GDP this year, up from over 4% in 2024, making it the highest in the EU in percentage terms. The Polish government is also pushing for a debate on increased military spending by EU member states during its presidency, emphasizing the existential threat posed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
