Archaeologists Discover Largest 2,000-Year-Old Private Bathhouse in Pompeii in 'Once-in-a-Century' Find
Jan 17, 2025, 11:01 AM
Archaeologists have unearthed a large private thermal bath complex in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, marking what has been described as a 'once-in-a-century' discovery. The bathhouse, potentially the largest of its kind found in a private residence in Pompeii, features hot, warm, and cold rooms, along with a plunge pool capable of accommodating 20 to 30 people. The complex, dating back 2,000 years, is part of a grand house in the Regio IX area, which also includes a banquet hall and a prayer room. The excavation, part of a broader effort in the region, has also revealed the remains of two individuals who perished during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, with findings including gold coins and pearl earrings. Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, highlighted the significance of the find, noting its connection to the city's elite, possibly including influential politician Aulus Rustius Verus. The discovery sheds light on the luxurious lifestyle of Pompeii's elite and the stark contrast with the lives of slaves who maintained such facilities.
