European Parliament Elections See Rightward Shift, SPD Suffers Historic Defeat, AfD at 16.5%
Jun 9, 2024, 04:11 PM
The European Parliament elections have concluded with a significant shift to the right. Exit polls indicate that right-leaning and eurosceptic nationalist parties are poised to make substantial gains. In Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD) suffered their worst-ever result, falling to third place with 14%, behind the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) at 16.5%. The conservative CDU/CSU alliance is set to win the national vote. Other right-leaning parties across Europe, including Le Pen's National Rally in France and Meloni's Brothers of Italy, are also expected to see significant gains. In Germany, 65 million voters were called to vote, but interest in the elections was only 24%, which is 13 percentage points lower than five years ago.
