U.S., Canada Sanction Samidoun as 'Sham Charity' Funding PFLP
Oct 15, 2024, 03:59 PM
In a coordinated action, the United States and Canada have designated Samidoun, also known as the Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, as a terrorist entity due to its alleged ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a recognized terrorist organization backed by Iran. The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against Samidoun on October 11, describing it as a "sham charity" that serves as an international fundraiser for the PFLP. Canada's Public Safety department similarly listed Samidoun as a terrorist group under the Criminal Code, effective immediately. The action also targets Khaled Barakat, a key Samidoun activist and member of the PFLP, and his wife Charlotte Kates, both of whom have been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury. The designation prohibits Samidoun from operating within the U.S. and Canada and freezes any assets it may hold in these countries.
