Iran and Sweden Conduct Omani-Mediated Prisoner Swap, Release Hamid Nouri, Johan Floderus, and Saeed Azizi
Jun 15, 2024, 12:16 PM
Iran and Sweden have conducted a prisoner swap resulting in the release of Hamid Nouri, a former Iranian official who was serving a life sentence in Sweden for his role in the 1988 mass execution of political prisoners in Iran. Nouri had been imprisoned since 2019 on charges that Iran claims were fabricated by the MEK. In exchange, Iran has released Swedish EU diplomat Johan Floderus and Swedish-Iranian citizen Saeed Azizi. The swap, mediated by Oman, marks a significant diplomatic breakthrough between the two nations. Iran's top human rights official, Kazem Gharib Abadi, confirmed the release.
