Premier League Passes APT Rule Changes 16-4 Despite Man City and Aston Villa Opposition
Nov 22, 2024, 07:33 AM
Premier League clubs have approved amendments to the Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules governing sponsorship deals, despite opposition from Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest. The vote, held during a shareholders meeting in London, saw 16 clubs in favor and four against the changes. Wolves and Everton, who previously opposed stricter APT rules, switched their stance and supported the amendments. Manchester City had challenged the proposed changes and sought to delay the vote, arguing that some of the league's rules were unlawful. Aston Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris publicly backed Manchester City in opposing the amendments. The changes aim to align the Premier League's APT rules with UK law, following concerns about the fairness and transparency of commercial agreements involving club owners and affiliated parties. The vote is seen as a significant defeat for Manchester City and may prompt further legal action from the club. The decision is considered one of the most divisive in the competition's history, with clubs engaged in frenetic lobbying prior to the meeting.
