South Korea's Transport Minister to Resign After Deadly Jeju Air Crash at Muan Airport
Jan 7, 2025, 09:16 AM
South Korea's Transport Minister Park Sang-woo has announced his intention to resign following the deadly crash of a Boeing jet operated by Jeju Air on December 29. The incident occurred at Muan International Airport, where the aircraft, en route from Bangkok, Thailand, to Muan, South Korea, made a belly landing and overshot the runway, crashing into an embankment and exploding. The crash resulted in the deaths of 179 passengers. Park expressed a sense of heavy responsibility for the disaster and stated he would seek an appropriate time to step down after addressing the current situation. The Ministry of Transport plans to enhance the safety of airport landing systems, which experts believe contributed to the accident. Investigations have revealed bird feathers in one of the aircraft's engines, suggesting a bird strike may have played a role in the crash.
