14 Officers Fired After Footage Shows Fatal Beating of Handcuffed Inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Prison
Dec 27, 2024, 06:48 PM
The New York Attorney General's Office has released body-worn camera footage showing corrections officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County violently beating Robert Brooks, a 43-year-old African-American inmate who later died from asphyxia due to neck compression. On December 9th, at least six officers allegedly handcuffed and shackled Brooks, strapped him to a medical gurney, and proceeded to punch, kick, and possibly suffocate him—all while smirking despite being recorded. Brooks died the following day at Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York. Fourteen employees have been terminated in connection with the incident. The footage, described as graphic and disturbing, is currently under review as part of an ongoing investigation by Attorney General Letitia James. Despite the severity of the incident, none of the officers involved have been criminally charged to date.
