International Ocean Tribunal Rules for Small Island States in Landmark Climate Case
May 21, 2024, 01:18 PM
An international ocean tribunal has issued a landmark advisory opinion, ruling that countries have a responsibility to reduce emissions and combat climate change. The United Nations maritime court ruled in favor of nine small island states, concluding that greenhouse gases are considered marine pollution. The tribunal stated that states parties are obligated to take 'all necessary measures' to prevent greenhouse gas pollution. This decision, part of a 'David and Goliath' precedent case, could provide legal leverage for future climate cases and set new precedents globally. The ruling was made by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
