3,600 Scientists Release Human Cell Atlas, Mapping 37 Trillion Cells in Landmark Nature Papers

The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) initiative has published a landmark collection of over 40 peer-reviewed papers across Nature Portfolio journals, presenting early draft maps of human cells that shed light on human development, health, and disease biology. This ambitious project aims to catalog every cell type among the estimated 37 trillion cells in the human body, from development to old age, providing a "Google Maps" or "Wikipedia" for human cells. The HCA involves a global collaborative effort, with contributions from over 3,600 scientists across 100 countries. Significant insights include mapping cells within cancer tumors and understanding brain development, leveraging advanced techniques like single-cell and spatial genomics, as well as AI and machine learning. Funding and support come from organizations like the Wellcome Trust and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. As Sarah Teichmann, a genomics expert at the UK's Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, noted, "It establishes a benchmark for detecting and understanding the changes that underlie health and disease."
