Nihon Hidankyo Wins 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for A-bomb Survivors' Nuclear Disarmament Efforts in Oslo
Dec 11, 2024, 11:00 AM
Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organization of atomic bomb survivors, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize for their long-standing efforts to promote nuclear disarmament. The award ceremony in Oslo highlighted the group's call for the abolition of nuclear weapons, with survivors sharing their experiences and urging younger generations to continue the fight. Terumi Tanaka, co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, emphasized the importance of maintaining the taboo against nuclear weapons, expressing his deep sorrow and indignation at the potential for this taboo to be broken. The ceremony was followed by a torchlight parade in Oslo, where the awardees were celebrated by the public. The award has reinvigorated the survivors' campaign against nuclear weapons, with a strong message for global nuclear disarmament. The world currently has an estimated 12,121 nuclear warheads, and the hibakusha, with an average age of over 85, need the support of the youth to continue their mission. At the Oslo Forum, survivors shared their experiences, and the group's representatives met with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, who expressed strong support for nuclear disarmament.
