Biden Approves Self-Destructing Antipersonnel Mines for Ukraine, Reversing Obama-Era Ban
Nov 20, 2024, 07:13 AM
President Joe Biden has authorized the provision of antipersonnel land mines to Ukraine, reversing a ban set during the Obama Administration and undoing his own policy. The decision aims to bolster Kyiv's defenses against advancing Russian troops, particularly in the eastern regions where Russian forces have been making gains. The mines supplied are reportedly "nonpersistent," designed to self-destruct or become inactive after a period, thereby reducing the risk to civilians. Ukraine has committed to avoiding their use in densely populated areas. Over 160 countries have signed an international treaty banning landmines due to their enduring harm to civilians, drawing criticism from arms control groups and some within Biden's own administration. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed the approval.
