Eduardo Paes was sworn in for his fourth term as mayor of Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, after being re-elected in the first round of the October 2024 election with 60.47% of the valid votes, which amounted to over 1.8 million votes. His new term will run until 2028. Alongside Paes, Vice Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere and 51 city councilors were also sworn in. Paes announced 46 decrees on the first day of his new term, focusing on areas such as security, health, and urban mobility. Key initiatives include the creation of a Municipal Security Force, the expansion of the Central Intelligence, Surveillance and Technology (CIVITAS) system, and the establishment of a working group for the Rio de Janeiro and Niterói bid for the 2031 Pan American and Parapan American Games (GT-PAN 2031). Paes also emphasized a commitment to political renewal and announced plans for new public-private partnerships worth at least R$ 2 billion.
