Pioneer of Parallel Cinema, Shyam Benegal, Dies at 90 in Mumbai

Renowned Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away at the age of 90 in Mumbai's Wockhardt Hospital after a prolonged illness due to chronic kidney disease. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14. Benegal, a pioneer of the Indian parallel cinema movement, was known for his acclaimed works such as 'Ankur', 'Nishant', 'Manthan', 'Zubeidaa', and the teleseries 'Bharat Ek Khoj'. He won 18 National Awards during his illustrious career and was honored with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. His daughter, Pia Benegal, confirmed his death. His last film was 'Mujib: The Making of a Nation' (2023). President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their condolences, acknowledging his profound impact on Indian cinema.
