Archaeologists Discover 2,000-Year-Old Private Bathhouse in Pompeii, Belonging to Aulus Rustius Verus
Jan 17, 2025, 09:15 AM
Archaeologists have made a significant discovery in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, unearthing a large private bathhouse that had been buried under volcanic debris for 2,000 years. The bathhouse, described as a 'once-in-a-century' find, is part of a grand residence that has been excavated over the past two years. The complex includes hot, warm, and cold rooms, adorned with exquisite artwork, and a large plunge pool capable of accommodating 20-30 people. The residence is believed to have belonged to Aulus Rustius Verus, an influential Pompeii politician, highlighting the elite status of its owner. The excavation also revealed two skeletons, a woman aged between 35 and 50 and a younger man in his teens or early 20s, who were unable to escape the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. The woman was found clutching gold and silver coins and jewelry, while the man held keys, offering a poignant glimpse into their final moments.
