Archaeologists Unearth Largest Private Thermal Bath Complex in Pompeii, Dating Back 2,000 Years
Jan 17, 2025, 03:20 PM
Archaeologists have unearthed a large and sophisticated private thermal bath complex in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, marking a 'once-in-a-century' discovery. The complex, found in a private house in the Regio IX area, is believed to be the largest of its kind ever found in Pompeii, according to Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Director of the Archaeological Park. The bathhouse, equipped with hot, warm, and cold rooms, could accommodate up to 30 people. It was discovered near a banquet hall, suggesting its use as a venue for social gatherings and to display the wealth of the homeowner. Alongside the bathhouse, archaeologists found gold coins and pearl earrings, dating back 2,000 years. The discovery sheds light on the luxurious lifestyle of Pompeii's elite before the city was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
