Dockworkers End Three-Day Strike with 62% Wage Deal; Return to Work Friday
Oct 3, 2024, 10:57 PM
Dockworkers represented by the International Longshoremen's Association have agreed to suspend their three-day strike after reaching a tentative agreement on wages with the United States Maritime Alliance. The agreement includes a 62% wage increase over six years, raising the base hourly rate from $39 to $69. This offer improves upon the employers' previous offer of a 50% increase but is less than the union's initial demand of a 77% raise. The strike had shut down major ports along the East and Gulf Coasts. The union and employers have extended the master contract until January 15, 2025, allowing time to negotiate remaining issues, including concerns over port automation. Dockworkers are set to return to work on Friday and will resume operations immediately.
