Hurricane Helene Death Toll Surpasses 200, Deadliest Since Katrina, Impacting Six States
Oct 3, 2024, 11:30 AM
Hurricane Helene has become one of the deadliest storms to hit the U.S. mainland, with the death toll surpassing 200. The hurricane caused catastrophic damage across the Southeast after making landfall in Florida, affecting states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia. North Carolina was particularly hard-hit, with over 100 fatalities reported, including 72 in Buncombe County. Hundreds of people remain missing, and search and rescue operations are ongoing. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have visited the affected areas to assess the damage and oversee federal response efforts. The storm has also left over 1 million people without power and caused widespread flooding and destruction of infrastructure. Helene is now the deadliest mainland hurricane since Katrina, impacting six states.
