Mondelez Fined €337.5 Million by EU for Cross-Border Anti-Competitive Practices, Says Vestager
May 23, 2024, 01:15 PM
Mondelez International, the US-based confectionery giant behind brands such as Oreo, Toblerone, Cadbury, and Milka, has been fined €337.5 million ($366 million) by the European Union for anti-competitive practices. The fine was imposed by EU antitrust regulators, including Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, for Mondelez's actions that restricted cross-border sales within the EU Single Market. These practices, which occurred between 2006 and 2020, included limiting the territories where wholesale customers could resell products and preventing distributors from responding to sales requests from other EU countries. The EU Commission stated that these actions allowed Mondelez to charge higher prices for its chocolate, cookies, and coffee, thereby harming consumers by reducing product availability and increasing costs.
