UK Transfers Chagos Islands to Mauritius After 200 Years; Retains Diego Garcia Base
Oct 3, 2024, 11:02 AM
After more than 200 years of British rule, the UK has agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, one of its last overseas territories, to Mauritius. The Mauritius Prime Minister, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, called the agreement a 'seminal moment' in their history. Under the historic deal, Mauritius will assume sovereignty over the Indian Ocean archipelago, while the UK retains authority over the strategic UK-US military base on Diego Garcia for an initial period of 99 years, ensuring its continued operation. The agreement allows for the resettlement of displaced Chagossians on the islands, excluding Diego Garcia. US President Joe Biden and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken applauded the agreement, stating it secures the effective operation of the joint facility on Diego Garcia and reflects a shared commitment to a secure and independent Indo-Pacific region. However, concerns have been raised by some UK politicians about national security implications and potential increased Chinese influence in the region. The announcement was made while the UK Parliament was not sitting, prompting criticism from some members.
