Biden Announces $3 Billion EPA Grants to Decarbonize Ports in 27 States
Oct 29, 2024, 02:37 PM
President Joe Biden announced a $3 billion investment to enhance U.S. port infrastructure, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental justice. The funding, provided through the EPA's Clean Ports Program under the Inflation Reduction Act, will support over 2,000 union jobs by facilitating the purchase and use of zero-emission port equipment, charging infrastructure, and power improvements. The EPA selected 55 applications from ports in 27 states and territories to receive this funding, which will also focus on improving air quality in surrounding communities. The initiative includes $147 million allocated to the Maryland Port Administration, with significant funding for ports across the nation, including over $1 billion for California ports. Ports in states like Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Virginia will also receive substantial investments to transition to zero-emission technology, improve air quality, and create green jobs.
