FDA Authorizes 20 Flavored Zyn Nicotine Pouches as Safer Alternative for Adult Smokers

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of 20 Zyn nicotine pouch products after an extensive scientific review, marking the first time the agency has authorized nicotine pouches. The decision allows Zyn, the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. tobacco market, to remain available to adult smokers seeking a less harmful alternative to cigarettes. The FDA stated that Zyn's benefit as a safer option for adult smokers outweighs its potential risk to young people, despite concerns over the appeal of flavored products to teens. The authorized products include flavors such as coffee, mint, and menthol. The FDA's review found that Zyn products contain fewer harmful ingredients than cigarettes and other types of chewing tobacco, which are linked with cancer and other diseases. The agency highlighted evidence that nicotine pouches offer "greater benefits to population health than risks." This authorization provides adult smokers with an alternative to help cut back or quit cigarettes while noting the need to monitor youth use and compliance with marketing restrictions.
