Zach Cregger to Direct 'Resident Evil' Reboot; Four Studios Including Warner Bros. and Netflix in Bidding War
Jan 24, 2025, 11:24 PM
Zach Cregger, the director of the 2022 horror hit 'Barbarian,' is set to write and direct a reboot of the 'Resident Evil' film franchise. The announcement has sparked an intense bidding war among four studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix, marking it as the first major auction of 2025. Constantin Film, which has held the screen rights since the late 1990s, will produce the reboot alongside PlayStation Productions. Cregger's approach is described as a revamp that aims to return the franchise to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games, which date back to 1996. The previous 'Resident Evil' films, starring Milla Jovovich, have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide. Cregger's next film, 'Weapons,' features Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, and he is also gearing up to release his first major film as a producer, the horror thriller 'Companion,' which is set to open on January 31.
