President Trump to Pardon All Nonviolent Jan. 6 Defendants, Commute Others' Sentences Within Hours

President Donald Trump is preparing to issue a sweeping series of pardons for all nonviolent individuals charged in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to sources cited by ABC News and CNN. The pardons are expected to be issued within hours and will cover nonviolent offenders, while the sentences of those convicted of more serious offenses, including violent attacks against law enforcement, will be commuted. The move could affect hundreds of his supporters who were convicted for their roles in the Capitol riot. The Justice Department may also drop some pending cases related to the incident. Approximately 1,580 individuals were charged in connection with the attack, with 1,270 convicted and about 1,100 sentenced.
