Hughes Fire Near Castaic Grows to 500 Acres, Evacuations Ordered, 5 Freeway Affected

A rapidly spreading brush fire, named the Hughes Fire, erupted near Castaic, just north of Los Angeles, on Wednesday afternoon. The fire started near the 5 Freeway at Lake Hughes Road and quickly grew to over 500 acres, driven by strong winds. The blaze is affecting the 5 Freeway and has spot fires reported a mile ahead of the main fire. An immediate need for 10 strike teams was requested, with significant air support ordered. Firefighters from the Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Fire Department are responding. Evacuations have been ordered in the area, including Lake Hughes Road to Templin Highway and along Ridge Route Road west of the fire, being carried out by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The fire is making a run toward Lake Hughes, with heavy spotting and rapid rates of spread.
