Stellantis to Reopen Illinois Plant in 2027, Bringing Back 1,500 Jobs and Building Dodge Durango in Detroit
Jan 22, 2025, 07:16 PM
Stellantis NV has announced plans to expand its U.S. manufacturing operations, following a meeting between its Chairman John Elkann and President Donald Trump. The company intends to reopen its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, in 2027 to produce a new midsize pickup truck, bringing back approximately 1,500 jobs. Additionally, Stellantis will manufacture the next-generation Dodge Durango SUV at its Detroit Assembly Complex. The company also plans to invest in its Toledo, Ohio plant, where it produces the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator, and in its Kokomo, Indiana facilities for the production of the GME-T4 EVO engine. These moves are part of a broader commitment to grow auto production and manufacturing in the U.S., amidst threats of new tariffs on Mexico and Canada by the Trump administration. The decision comes after the United Auto Workers (UAW) filed grievances over delays and potential moves of production, following the resignation of former CEO Carlos Tavares.
