Jan 24, 2025, 02:55 AM
PowerSchool, a leading provider of cloud-based education software for K-12 schools, has disclosed a significant data breach affecting millions of students and teachers across North America. The breach, which occurred after a hacker used stolen support credentials to access PowerSchool's PowerSource customer support portal, led to the theft of personal data of 62.4 million students and 9.5 million teachers. The compromised information includes sensitive data such as Social Security numbers and medical information. The Toronto District School Board reported that the breach impacted 1.49 million students dating back to 1985, with the number of affected Canadian students rising to 2.4 million. PowerSchool has confirmed paying a ransom to prevent the data from being leaked and is offering two years of free identity protection and credit monitoring services to those affected. The company is also conducting an ongoing investigation into the breach, with assistance from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
