Raiders Hire 73-Year-Old Pete Carroll as NFL's Oldest Head Coach
Jan 24, 2025, 03:35 PM
Pete Carroll has been hired as the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders under a three-year deal with a fourth-year team option, according to multiple reports. Carroll, aged 73, will become the oldest head coach in NFL history, surpassing Andy Reid by seven years. Carroll, a Super Bowl-winning coach with the Seattle Seahawks, brings a career record of 170-120-1 to the Raiders. Other coaching candidates have been informed that they are no longer in consideration. This move marks the first major franchise decision in the Tom Brady ownership era of the Raiders. During his tenure with the Seahawks from 2012 to 2020, Carroll led the team to four divisional titles and back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowl XLVIII. The Raiders, who finished the 2024 season with only five players over the age of 30 on the roster, hope that Carroll's leadership and ability to build strong team cultures will guide them in the highly competitive AFC West division. There is speculation about whether Carroll can still connect with a young team, but the Raiders are aiming to change the culture in Las Vegas by bringing in one of the best.
