OpenAI Launches 'Operator' AI Agent for Pro Users, Automating Web Tasks via ChatGPT
Jan 23, 2025, 05:39 PM
OpenAI is preparing to release Operator, a new ChatGPT feature and AI agent designed to automate complex tasks typically performed through a web browser. Operator can perform tasks such as making restaurant reservations, planning trips, ordering groceries based on a picture, and managing workflows in applications like Salesforce or Asana. Users can save and share tasks, but Operator is not available via the API and cannot log in to Gmail. The feature uses a "Computer-Using Agent" model that combines GPT-4's vision capabilities with advanced reasoning abilities. Operator opens a miniature browser within ChatGPT to interact with websites by typing, clicking, and scrolling, and prompts users for additional information as needed. Operator is initially being released as a research preview to Pro users in the U.S., who pay $200 per month, with plans to roll it out to other users later. Some users have already gained early access, and a live demo event is scheduled for the launch.
