Lithuania has committed to increasing its defense spending to between 5% and 6% of its GDP from 2026 to 2030, a decision made by the State Defence Council. This move is in response to heightened security concerns and aims to accelerate the development of a new military division. Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys has called on NATO allies to follow this lead. The increased spending is intended to enhance Lithuania's military capabilities and deter potential threats, particularly from Russia, amid calls from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump for NATO members to boost their defense budgets.
