Miami Hires Minnesota's Corey Hetherman as Defensive Coordinator, Pays Six-Figure Buyout
Jan 11, 2025, 09:55 PM
Corey Hetherman, the defensive coordinator for the University of Minnesota, has resigned to take up the same position at the University of Miami. Hetherman, who led Minnesota to rank fifth nationally in total defense and ninth in scoring defense during the recent season, was a key target for Miami following the dismissal of their previous coordinator, Lance Guidry. His departure from Minnesota comes despite a recent two-year contract extension, which included a higher salary and a larger buyout. Miami is expected to pay a six-figure buyout to Minnesota as part of the transition. Minnesota plans to promote internally to fill the vacancy left by Hetherman, with no intention to conduct an external search. Hetherman, part of the Greg Schiano coaching tree, improved Minnesota's defense from 69th to 9th in points allowed per game and achieved a 15th ranking in 4th down defense.
