Bangladesh Seeks Extradition of Ousted PM Sheikh Hasina from India, Sends Diplomatic Note
Dec 23, 2024, 10:40 AM
Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after her removal from office. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a note verbale to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs seeking her return for judicial proceedings. Sheikh Hasina is accused of involvement in mass killings during the 'July Massacre' student protests. Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury confirmed that a letter has been sent to facilitate her return. De facto Foreign Minister Touhid Hossain stated, 'We have sent a note verbale to the Indian government saying Bangladesh wants her back for the judicial process.' Interpol has reportedly issued a Red Notice for Sheikh Hasina's arrest. The interim government wants her to face trial for charges related to genocide and killings.
