Brazil's Federal Police Links Bolsonaro, Military Officials to 2022 Coup Plot in Operation Contragolpe
Dec 2, 2024, 05:05 PM
Brazil's Federal Police (PF) has uncovered evidence implicating former President Jair Bolsonaro and high-ranking military officials in a plot to stage a coup in 2022. The investigation revealed that General Valério Stumpf Trindade acted as an informant for Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Trindade, once considered by President Lula for the role of Army commander, has been accused by bolsonaristas of betraying their cause. The PF's examination of 78 military officials' conduct, part of Operation Contragolpe, has led to accusations of disloyalty and betrayal among generals. Additionally, Supreme Court Justice Moraes authorized the transfer of two individuals, Lieutenant Colonel Rodrigo Bezerra Azevedo and General Mário Fernandes, involved in the coup plot, to a military prison in Brasília.
