France to Open First High-Security Prison for 100 Drug Traffickers in July 2025; Transfers Begin in March
Jan 25, 2025, 11:18 AM
France is set to open its first high-security prison dedicated to the country's top 100 drug traffickers in July 2025. The announcement was made by Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin on January 23, 2025. This facility aims to prevent inmates from continuing to run criminal operations from behind bars. The government plans to begin transferring inmates to this prison in March 2025, with a total of three such facilities expected to be established within the next two years, accommodating more than 600 particularly dangerous narcotraffickers. While the initiative is part of broader efforts to combat drug trafficking, some unions and prison reform advocates have raised concerns about its effectiveness.
