Spain Launches Alia, Public AI Model in Spanish, With 150 Million Euros and Two Pilot Projects
Jan 20, 2025, 11:47 AM
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced the launch of Alia, a public artificial intelligence model in Spanish and co-official languages, designed with open-source code. The announcement was made during the 'HispanIA 2040: cómo la inteligencia artificial mejorará nuestro futuro' event in Madrid. Alia, dubbed the 'ChatGPT español', aims to foster research and technological solutions based on Spanish, the world's second most spoken language. Sánchez highlighted the government's commitment to supercomputing, semiconductors, and AI, emphasizing the vast opportunities these technologies present. Alongside the launch, the government is mobilizing 150 million euros to promote AI use in Spanish companies, with 20 million euros specifically allocated for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Additionally, Spain will grant $155 million in subsidies to help companies develop AI. Two pilot projects utilizing Alia are set to begin, one to streamline operations at the Tax Agency and another to enhance early diagnosis of heart failure in primary care.
