South Korea's Acting President Choi Sang-mok Rejects Mass Resignation of Yoon Suk Yeol's Aides Amid Impeachment
Jan 1, 2025, 05:52 AM
Acting President Choi Sang-mok of South Korea has rejected the mass resignation offered by senior aides of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol. The aides, including the chief of staff, policy chief, national security advisor, and special advisor on foreign affairs and security, tendered their resignations on January 1, 2025, following Choi's appointment of two new justices to the Constitutional Court. This court is set to decide on Yoon's impeachment, which was initiated after his attempt to declare martial law on December 3, 2024. Choi, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Finance Minister, stated that he is focused on stabilizing the country and improving the economic situation, and thus has no plans to accept the resignations. Yoon faces allegations of leading an insurrection, and a Seoul district court approved his arrest on December 31, 2024, marking the first time a sitting South Korean president has faced such action.
