Madison Keys Wins First Grand Slam, Denies Sabalenka's Three-Peat at Australian Open
Jan 25, 2025, 11:29 AM
Madison Keys claimed her first Grand Slam title by defeating two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in a thrilling Australian Open final. The 29-year-old American prevented Sabalenka from securing a third consecutive Melbourne title. Keys' victory marked a remarkable comeback, as she became the first woman in 20 years to defeat the world's top two players en route to the Australian Open title, overcoming No.2 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals and No.1 Sabalenka in the final. She is also only the fourth player in the Open Era to win a women's singles major by defeating four top-10 seeded opponents, having beaten Collins, Rybakina, Svitolina, Swiatek, and Sabalenka. After the match, Sabalenka displayed frustration by smashing her racket and temporarily leaving the court before the trophy ceremony. Keys, overcome with emotion, credited hard work and therapy for her breakthrough victory. She celebrated the win with her husband and coach, Bjorn Fratangelo, whom she married in late 2024.
