Brazil's Lula, 79, Recovering After Successful Brain Surgeries Following October Fall
Dec 13, 2024, 12:30 AM
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, 79, is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery at the Hospital Sírio-Libanês in São Paulo to treat an intracranial hemorrhage caused by a fall in October. The initial procedure, performed on Tuesday, successfully drained a hematoma in his brain. Lula remained under intensive care, lucid, oriented, and conversing, with a drainage tube in place while awaiting routine exams. On Thursday morning, he underwent a second procedure, an endovascular embolization of the middle meningeal artery, which lasted less than an hour and was successful in preventing future bleeding. Following the procedures, he has transitioned to semi-intensive care, had the drainage tube removed, and has been walking in the hospital corridors. His medical team reports that he is expected to be discharged early next week.
