Billy Wagner Elected to Hall of Fame with 82.5% Votes, Induction Set for July 27
Jan 21, 2025, 11:29 PM
Billy Wagner, a former Major League Baseball closer, has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his 10th and final year of eligibility on the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) ballot. Wagner received 82.5% of the votes, surpassing the required 75% threshold by 28 votes. Over his 16-year career, Wagner played for teams including the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Braves. Known for his dominance as a reliever, Wagner retired with 422 career saves, the eighth-most in MLB history, and a career ERA of 2.31. He was a seven-time All-Star and holds several records, including the best strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio (11.92) and lowest opponents' batting average (.187) among pitchers with at least 900 innings pitched. Wagner joins former Astros teammates Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell in the Hall of Fame. Carlos Beltrán, another former Astro, fell short of induction this year. Wagner's induction will take place in Cooperstown on July 27, 2025, alongside Ichiro Suzuki and CC Sabathia, as part of the Hall of Fame class of 2025.
