U.S. to List Monarch Butterfly as Threatened Species Under Endangered Species Act
Dec 10, 2024, 09:30 PM
U.S. wildlife officials announced Tuesday plans to extend federal protections to the monarch butterfly by proposing to list it as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act. The decision follows years of warnings from environmentalists about the continued decline in the butterfly's population, which may not survive climate change and habitat loss. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's proposal, which will undergo an extensive public comment period, aims to help conserve the iconic orange and black pollinator.
