Target Rolls Back DEI Initiatives, Joins Walmart, McDonald's, Meta Amid Trump Pressure
Jan 24, 2025, 06:38 PM
Target Corp. has announced the rollback of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, joining a growing list of major American companies scaling back such programs. The decision comes amid pressure from President Donald Trump and conservative activists, following Trump's executive order aimed at ending DEI programs across the federal government. In a memo to employees, Kiera Fernandez, Target's chief community impact and equity officer, outlined the changes to the company's 'Belonging at the Bulleye' strategy. Target's move includes ending its three-year DEI goals, ceasing reports to external diversity-focused groups like the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index, and discontinuing a program focused on carrying more products from Black- or minority-owned businesses. This action follows the police killing of George Floyd in 2020 and aligns with similar retreats by companies such as Walmart, McDonald's, Meta, and others, amidst a shifting political and legal landscape regarding diversity initiatives.
