TSMC Begins Mass Production at First Japan Fab in Kumamoto, Plans 2nm Process and Second Fab by Q1 2025

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has commenced mass production at its first chip fabrication plant in Japan, located in Kumamoto Prefecture. The governor of Kumamoto announced that TSMC notified him of the launch on December 28, 2024. This facility represents a significant advancement in Japan's semiconductor supply chain. Additionally, TSMC plans to break ground on its second fab in Japan within the first quarter of 2025. In parallel, TSMC is also set to begin construction of its fourth and fifth fabs in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, next year. The first fab in Kaohsiung is expected to start mass production of the advanced 2-nanometer process in 2025. TSMC's expansion efforts underscore its commitment to enhancing global semiconductor production capabilities amidst increasing demand.
