Apple to Replace Qualcomm Modems in iPhones, iPads Over Three Years
Dec 6, 2024, 04:37 PM
Apple Inc. is embarking on a three-year plan to replace Qualcomm Inc.'s modems with its own in-house developed chips, aiming to reduce its dependency on the supplier. The rollout will begin with the iPhone SE 4 in the first half of 2025, featuring the entry-level Sinope modem without mmWave capabilities. Subsequent releases will include the Ganymede modem in 2026 for the iPhone 18 and high-end iPads, and a more advanced modem in 2027 that will match Qualcomm's technology from the previous year. Apple's strategy involves gradually phasing out Qualcomm's components, potentially impacting Qualcomm's revenue, which currently accounts for 22% from Apple. This move also aims to improve power efficiency and integrate satellite connectivity into Apple's devices, including the iPhone 17 Air and low-end iPads.
