Brazil Orders Global Ban of Adele's 'Million Years Ago' Over 'Mulheres' Plagiarism Claim by Toninho Geraes
Dec 17, 2024, 09:42 AM
A Brazilian judge from the 6th Business Court of Rio de Janeiro has ordered the global removal of Adele's song "Million Years Ago" from all platforms following a plagiarism claim by composer Toninho Geraes. Geraes alleges that the song, released in 2015, copies his 1995 composition "Mulheres," popularized by Martinho da Vila. The court's decision prohibits the reproduction, distribution, and commercialization of "Million Years Ago" in any modality, medium, physical support, digital, streaming, or sharing platform across 181 countries. Non-compliance with the ruling could result in a penalty of R$50,000 per violation. Universal Music, Adele's record label, has appealed the ruling. Geraes is reportedly seeking R$1 million in damages.
